Risk CFDs carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage.

Trading Strategy with Prabhudas Lilladher

Prabhudas Lilladher gives you a SEBI-regulated full-service brokerage with equity, F&O, currency, mutual funds and IPO access. The strategy itself is built by you, from the tools the platform hands over. Most brokers do not sell you a method.

Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt. Ltd. is a domestic full-service broker under SEBI, a member of NSE, BSE and MCX, and a depository participant with NSDL and CDSL. Founded in 1944, it is one of the oldest names in Indian broking and now rebrands its group as PL Capital. For a first-timer, that history matters less than one thing: your money sits inside the Indian regulatory perimeter, where you can verify who is holding it.

Before you pick any single order type, the working assumption for a beginner in India should be that your strategy has to fit inside a specific legal box, and the box shapes what is possible. Knowing the box first saves months of confusion later.

What a method means here

Trading strategy is not a product you buy. It is a written set of rules that says what you trade, when you enter, how much you risk, and when you stop for the day. Prabhudas Lilladher gives you the execution layer: PL Digi Trade for orders, TradePlus and Tradeclue for research and tracking, PL Digi MF for funds. The rules come from you.

A useful beginner frame is to keep the strategy narrow. One instrument family, one timeframe, one fixed risk per trade. Full-service brokers in India typically bundle research calls, relationship managers and IPO support, and most of that is noise until you have a written plan. Write the plan first, then decide which of these tools actually serve it.

Because the platform supports equity, F&O, currency derivatives and mutual funds, a newcomer can easily spread too thin. The industry norm among full-service brokers is similar breadth, and the failure mode is the same everywhere: too many products, no single tested rule.

Products you can build on

The strategy menu here is wide, and each line has its own margin, hours and tax treatment. Currency derivatives on the exchange are one example: NSE INR currency pairs trade 09:00-17:00 IST Monday to Friday, while cross-currency derivatives run 09:00-19:30 IST.

ProductTypical beginner useNotes for India
Equity deliveryLong-term buys, SIP-styleSettled in INR, no FX conversion
Equity intradaySame-day speculationSpeculative income for tax
F&OHedging or defined-risk tradesMargins set by exchange
Currency derivativesUSD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INROnly on NSE, BSE, MSE
Mutual funds, IPO, bondsPortfolio corePL Digi MF supports funds

Residents can trade only INR-based currency pairs plus permitted cross-currency derivatives on SEBI-recognised exchanges. Spot forex and CFDs with offshore brokers sit outside that framework, and that is not a sales line, it is the practical boundary of what an Indian resident can legally run here.

FYI
Prabhudas Lilladher does not offer an Islamic or swap-free account. If swap-free structure is central to your method, the industry data shows 53 of 88 brokers covered in India offer one, mostly on the offshore side. That is a real gap to plan around.

Margin and the leverage reality

Leverage in India does not work like the round numbers you see advertised. There is no single fixed retail cap as there is under ESMA, where 1:30 is standard. Exchange-traded INR currency derivatives are margin-based, with SEBI and exchange SPAN plus exposure margins landing roughly at 3-5 percent, so about 20-30x on notional.

Prabhudas Lilladher offers intraday margin and MTF, a loan against shares and margin funding facility, all inside SEBI peak-margin rules. For a beginner, MTF is where the method usually breaks. It lets you hold a larger position than your cash, and the cost of that borrowed exposure runs quietly while you wait for the trade to work.

Most full-service brokers price MTF as an interest charge on the funded amount. If your rule is "hold until it comes back," MTF turns a strategy into a financing decision. Write the maximum holding period into your plan before you use it.

RISK
Exchange margin rules change with SEBI and exchange circulars. Numbers here are as of the review. Verify current SPAN plus exposure margins with the exchange before sizing a position.

Costs inside a strategy

Costs decide whether a method is viable at all. A rule that wins on paper can lose after brokerage, AMC and taxes if the holding period is short and the edge is thin.

Cost itemPrabhudas LilladherIndia norm
Account openingRs 0Often free
Annual maintenanceAbout Rs 300 per yearRs 300-750 typical
Brokerage planAbout 0.0033 percent of turnoverFull-service percentage plans
Per-segment flat ratesNot verified at reviewDiscount brokers offer flat

The percentage plan suits larger positions and delivery trades better than high-frequency small-ticket scalping. Serious scalpers in India overwhelmingly use flat-fee or per-order discount pricing, and if that is your method, this cost structure will eat into it. That is not a flaw in the broker, it is a mismatch between plan and method.

Money moves through UPI, net-banking, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS in INR, and the exchange settles in INR, so there is no domestic FX conversion layer. Account opening is free with no stated minimum, though brokerages often quote a low starting figure.

Where strategy meets tax

Profit type drives tax here, not the broker. Exchange-traded currency futures and options profit is generally treated as non-speculative business income, taxed at your income-tax slab rate. Intraday speculative positions are speculative business income, and speculative losses can be set off only against speculative income with a four-year carry-forward, while non-speculative losses carry forward eight years.

If you trade both intraday equity and positional F&O, you are running two tax buckets in parallel. A trading journal that logs the category of every trade pays for itself at filing time. The tax authority is the Income Tax Department under the CBDT.

The practical point for a beginner method: a same-day rule and a multi-week rule are not just different in risk, they are different in how losses carry forward. Choose which one you are building before the first trade, not after.

PRO TIP
Offshore brokers advertising 100x-1000x leverage to Indian residents are outside the legal framework, and fund remittances for margin forex are not a permitted LRS purpose. If a 20-30x margin on the exchange feels too low, the fix is a smaller position or a tighter stop, not a different broker.

A reality check on the method

Full-service broking carries an expectation that the research desk guides you. That is not a strategy. Research calls arrive without position sizing, without a stop level that fits your capital, and without an exit rule for your timeframe, which is why most beginners take the entry and improvise the rest.

MTF and intraday margin make this worse before they make it better. A method with a 55 percent hit rate is profitable with fixed risk and ruinous with a variable one. The first thing that breaks is not the analysis, it is the size of the second position after a losing first.

CAUTION
RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms. As of 19 November 2025 the list totals 95 entities, and RBI states it is not exhaustive. Common scams include Telegram and WhatsApp signal groups promising fixed monthly returns, cloned broker apps, and platforms that accept deposits and then block withdrawals. Check any platform against SEBI and RBI registers first.

Does the setup fit your method

Prabhudas Lilladher is a legitimate, long-established domestic broker with a broad product shelf and a real regulatory footprint. The method itself is your work, and the cost plan and margin tools determine whether that work survives contact with the market.

A good fit for: You are an Indian resident building a delivery-plus-occasional-F&O method, you value a domestic broker with NSDL and CDSL depository services, you want UPI funding in INR without conversion, and you plan to hold positions long enough for a percentage brokerage plan to stay small. You also want research and IPO access bundled rather than assembled from several apps.

A poor fit for: You scalp intraday with dozens of small orders a day, or your method depends on spot forex, CFDs or swap-free accounts. In those cases, look at brokers with flat per-order pricing or at internationally regulated venues where such products sit inside a licensed framework, and weigh their client-fund segregation, regulatory tier and cost transparency before anything else. Whether the plan or the platform is the issue, the fix is choosing against your method, not the biggest brand.

Questions

Can I use high leverage to make a small account grow faster?

+

Not the leverage you may have seen advertised. Exchange-traded INR currency derivatives run on SEBI and exchange SPAN plus exposure margins, roughly 3-5 percent, about 20-30x on notional. Offshore brokers advertising 100x to 1000x to Indian residents fall outside the legal framework, and remitting funds abroad for margin forex is not a permitted LRS purpose.

How does MTF change my strategy?

+

MTF funds part of your position against shares, and it is offered here under SEBI peak-margin rules. The effect is that a losing trade keeps costing you while it stays open, so any method using MTF needs a maximum holding period written down in advance. Otherwise a timing decision quietly turns into a financing one.

How is profit from these trades taxed?

Exchange-traded currency futures and options profit is generally treated as non-speculative business income and taxed at your slab rate. Intraday speculative losses set off only against speculative income with a four-year carry-forward, while non-speculative losses carry forward eight years.
